Kapwing conducted an analysis of automated video content on YouTube. The study involved reviewing the top 100 trending channels in various countries and examining the first 500 Shorts displayed to a new account.
The findings revealed that 21% of the Shorts were AI-generated videos, totaling 104 out of 500. Additionally, 165 videos, or 33%, were categorized as repetitive and nonsensical content designed to retain viewer attention through repetition. Initially, the feed displayed no AI content in the first 16 Shorts, but this proportion increased subsequently. A separate analysis in July indicated that nearly 10% of the fastest-growing channels worldwide exclusively featured AI-generated content.
Spain recorded the highest number of subscribers associated with trending AI content channels, with 20.22 million subscribers across eight channels. Pakistan followed with 20 channels in its top 100, and Egypt had 14, though their combined subscriber numbers were lower.
The United States ranked third, with 14.47 million subscribers linked to nine channels, followed by Brazil with 12.56 million. A significant portion of Spain’s total was attributed to one channel, Imperio de jesus, which had 5.87 million subscribers during the review period.

South Korea led in terms of viewership numbers, with 8.45 billion views across 11 trending AI content channels. Pakistan followed with 5.34 billion views, the United States with 3.39 billion, and Spain with 2.52 billion.
The channel Three Minutes Wisdom accounted for nearly a quarter of South Korea’s views with 2.02 billion views, featuring stylized animal battles. Its estimated annual ad revenue is approximately $4,036,500. India’s Bandar Apna Dost had 2.07 billion views and estimated earnings of $4,251,500, presenting realistic monkey-themed content. In the United States, Cuentos Facinantes was the most subscribed channel, with 5.95 million subscribers and 1.28 billion views.
YouTube executives have discussed the role of machine tools in video creation, with generative AI likened to the transformative impact of synthesizers in music. The quality of content is considered dependent on human intent rather than the extent of AI usage.
Advertisers face challenges with the potential placement of their messages alongside repetitive content, which could impact YouTube’s revenue model as these videos promote extended viewing sessions. Researchers indicate that repeated exposure to shallow imagery may influence belief formation, as familiar claims are perceived as true over time. The ease of producing such imagery at scale is facilitated by AI tools.
Kapwing’s report suggests that media literacy is increasingly important, especially for younger audiences, to navigate the proliferation of automated content.
