OpenAI has announced the upcoming testing of advertisements within ChatGPT for logged-in adult users in the United States on the Free and Go tiers. The testing phase is expected to begin in the coming weeks, although advertisements are not yet live. Users with Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will remain unaffected by these changes and will not see ads.
Advertisement Display and User Experience
Advertisements will be displayed at the bottom of responses when a sponsored product or service is relevant to the conversation. Each advertisement will be clearly labeled as paid content. The sequence of content is designed to prioritize user experience, ensuring that the response is provided before the advertisement appears, thereby minimizing disruption.
OpenAI asserts that user conversations within ChatGPT remain private from advertisers. User data will not be sold or shared with brands. If a user chooses to engage with an advertiser through an ad, only those interactions will be shared with the advertiser. Advertisements will not be displayed alongside sensitive discussions, such as those related to health or politics, and accounts identified as belonging to individuals under 18 will not be shown ads during the testing phase.

Impact on Free Users and Subscription Options
For Free and Go users, advertisements will support fewer usage limitations. The ChatGPT Go subscription, priced at $8 per month, has been available in 171 countries since August. Paid tiers will not experience any changes, maintaining a clear distinction between the ad-supported free access and the advertisement-free paid options.
