OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Health, a dedicated section within its platform designed to address health and wellness inquiries. The service reportedly receives weekly engagement from over 230 million individuals worldwide, covering topics from dietary advice to interpreting blood test results. This initiative aims to streamline the tracking of health-related discussions, separating them from other unrelated interactions.
ChatGPT Health is intended to serve as a supportive tool for medical care, allowing users to identify patterns in health data without replacing professional medical advice. The platform facilitates preparation for medical appointments, interpretation of lab results, and monitoring of fitness and nutrition habits.
Data Security and Privacy in ChatGPT Health
OpenAI emphasizes the separation of health-related data within ChatGPT Health. Conversations, files, and connected applications are stored independently from other platform interactions, ensuring privacy. The service employs a dedicated memory system that prevents health information from being integrated into standard conversations.
Conversations within ChatGPT Health are encrypted and isolated, adhering to specific health data protection protocols. Importantly, these interactions are not used to train OpenAI’s foundational models. Users can access their Health chat history, manage or delete memories, and exercise control over their data. Health information remains confined to the Health section, with only non-sensitive contextual data allowed to migrate if deemed beneficial.

Users can link medical records and wellness applications to ChatGPT Health, allowing for personalized responses. Currently, the integration of medical records is limited to users in the United States who are over 18 years old. OpenAI collaborates with b.well to provide a secure network for connecting health data, which may include lab results, visit summaries, and clinical history.
Apple Health users can sync their data with ChatGPT Health through the iOS app, which can include movement, sleep, and activity patterns. The connection requires an iPhone and may involve delays for extensive data histories.
Third-party wellness applications related to workouts, nutrition, hiking routes, and grocery ordering are also compatible. These applications are disabled by default, and OpenAI mandates compliance with privacy and security standards. Users have the option to disconnect these apps at any time, immediately revoking access.
Development and Availability of ChatGPT Health
The development of ChatGPT Health involved collaboration with over 260 physicians across 60 countries. Over a two-year period, these professionals reviewed model responses more than 600,000 times across 30 areas to enhance tone, clarity, and safety. This feedback contributed to HealthBench, an assessment system aligned with clinical quality standards.
Initial access to ChatGPT Health is available via a waitlist, with early access granted to users subscribed to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK. At launch, medical record integration and certain app connections are restricted to the US.
