HANOI – The family of a 19-year-old British woman who died following a road accident in northern Vietnam has chosen to donate her organs, giving a second chance at life to five critically ill patients.
Orla Wates was exploring the renowned Ha Giang Loop, a scenic but treacherous mountain circuit in the northernmost part of the country, when she reportedly fell from the back of a motorcycle. Following the incident, she was transported to the Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Hanoi. Despite medical efforts, she passed away on April 2, with her parents by her bedside.
A Decision Transcending Borders
Following their daughter's passing, Orla’s parents made the "deeply compassionate" decision to donate her organs to the hospital that treated her. According to hospital representatives, this donation has directly benefited five Vietnamese patients in critical condition.
"Orla was beautiful, independent, and very funny," her mother, Henrietta Wates, told local media. "We chose to donate Orla’s organs as we believe that if there were a way to give opportunity to others, this is what Orla would have wanted. Knowing that she is living on through them brings us great comfort."
Following the incident, she was transported to the Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Hanoi.
Orla’s father, Andrew Wates, added that his daughter had developed a deep love for Vietnam during her travels, making the decision to give back to the South East Asian nation "very important" to the family.
Traveling the Ha Giang Loop
The teenager had been traveling across Southeast Asia as part of a gap year before beginning a degree at Durham University.
The Ha Giang Loop is a 350km (217-mile) route famous for its dramatic limestone peaks and steep mountain passes. While it is a popular destination for backpackers, it is notoriously dangerous. Many tour operators advise international visitors to ride as "easy riders" (passengers on the back of motorcycles driven by experienced local guides) rather than operating the vehicles themselves.
Road Safety Concerns
The tragedy highlights the persistent risks on Vietnam’s roads. National statistics for 2024 indicate a high toll of traffic-related incidents, with more than 10,000 fatalities and 16,000 injuries recorded across the country this year alone.
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) stated: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Orla Wates following her tragic death in Vietnam. We are in touch with local authorities and are offering support to the family at this hugely difficult time."
A representative from the Viet Duc Friendship Hospital praised the family's selfless act, stating that while Orla's personal journey had ended, "her life continues quietly and resiliently in others who have been given a second chance."
