Can a One-Hour Installation Save California's Heat Pump Mandate?

Merino Energy aims to accelerate California's climate goals with a $3,800 heat pump that can be installed in just one hour.

Can a One-Hour Installation Save California's Heat Pump Mandate?

Bridging the Gap in California’s Electrification Goals

In 2022, California set an ambitious environmental benchmark: the installation of 6 million heat pumps by 2030. However, progress has been slow. To date, only 2.3 million units have been installed, leaving a massive deficit. To reach the target, the state requires an average of 2,000 new installations every single day for the next five years.

This goal faces significant headwinds due to the high cost and logistical complexity of traditional HVAC systems. According to data from EnergySage, a standard mini-split system can cost between $4,000 and $6,000 per zone and typically requires a full day of labor.

“We’ve got to do something different,” says Mary-Ann Rau, co-founder and CEO of Merino Energy. Rau, a former Apple executive and veteran of the heat pump startup Quilt, is launching a new solution designed to disrupt the market by simplifying both the technology and the price point.

The Merino Mono: An All-in-One Solution

Emerging from stealth, Merino Energy has unveiled its flagship product: the Merino Mono. Unlike traditional systems that rely on a bulky outdoor condenser and a separate indoor unit, the Mono integrates all components into a single chassis roughly the size of a standard radiator.

The system offers several key innovations:

  • Plug-and-Play Power: It runs on a standard 120-volt outlet. "If you can plug in a microwave and it works, the Merino Mono will work," Rau explained. This eliminates the need for expensive electrical panel upgrades in older homes.
  • Rapid Installation: While traditional units take a day to install, the Mono can be set up in approximately one hour.
  • Lower Total Cost: The unit is priced at $3,800, which includes the cost of installation.

To install the device, workers simply cut two holes in the wall for intake and exhaust. From the exterior, only two small ports and a condensate pipe are visible, making it an ideal choice for apartments, condos, and historical buildings where outdoor space is limited.

Smart Features and Efficiency Trade-offs

Despite its compact size, the Mono features high-tech specifications including Wi-Fi connectivity and occupancy sensors. The company is even developing an integration with Oura Rings to automatically lower room temperatures when a user enters REM sleep.

However, miniaturization comes with a trade-off in efficiency. The Merino Mono has a SEER2 rating of 15.2, significantly lower than high-end dual-unit systems like Quilt, which can reach 25. Rau acknowledges that while large outdoor condensers are more efficient, the Mono is a "proportional solution" for urban dwellers who might otherwise be unable to electrify their homes.

Scaling for the Future

Merino Energy is already putting its technology to the test. The company is currently installing 48 units at the Civic Center Apartments, a low-income housing development in Richmond, California.

While initially focused on its home state, Merino plans to expand into Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington. Six installation partners have already signed on across the Bay Area and Los Angeles. As California races against its 2030 deadline, simplified, accessible technology like the Mono may be the key to turning ambitious climate goals into reality.

About the Technology The Merino Mono eliminates the need for brazing copper lines and handling extra refrigerant on-site, removing the most labor-intensive parts of the HVAC installation process. Pre-orders are currently open for delivery later this year.
