NASA has unveiled the first batch of photographs captured by the Artemis II crew during their historic lunar flyby, offering a modern perspective on the "blue marble" that has captivated humanity for decades.
Among the most striking images is an "Earthset," showing the brightly lit Earth peeking over the rugged, cratered horizon of the lunar surface. The photograph immediately drew comparisons to the legendary 1968 "Earthrise" taken by Bill Anders during the Apollo 8 mission—a photo credited with sparking the modern environmental movement.
Witnessing a Long-Duration Eclipse
Beyond the sight of home, the four-person crew was treated to a rare celestial alignment: a solar eclipse viewed from the proximity of the Moon. While totality on Earth is measured in mere minutes, the Orion spacecraft's position allowed the astronauts to witness 54 minutes of totality.
Photos released by NASA show the Sun’s glowing corona radiating around the dark disk of the Moon. In one frame, the planet Venus is visible as a bright point of light in the lower-left corner.

Astronaut Victor Glover described the experience as "sci-fi" and "unreal" in radio transmissions. "The Sun has gone behind the Moon and the corona is still visible, and it's bright and creates a halo almost around the entire moon," Glover remarked. "The Earth is so bright out there and the Moon is just hanging in front of us."
Scientific Value of the "Far Side"
The images were captured through the windows of the Orion capsule at approximately 18:41 EDT (23:41 BST) on Monday. During the flyby, the spacecraft passed behind the "far side" of the Moon, resulting in a period of radio silence. NASA photographers and scientists highlighted specific geological features in the foreground of the shots, including the Ohm crater, which features terraced edges and central peaks formed by liquefied lunar surface material splashing upward during impact.
While unmanned satellites have mapped the far side of the moon extensively since the last Apollo mission in 1972, NASA emphasizes that human observation remains invaluable. The crew recorded detailed audio descriptions of the lunar topography, which scientists will analyze alongside the high-resolution imagery to better understand the moon's composition.
The Artemis II crew is currently on their return journey to Earth, marking a major milestone in NASA's plan to establish a long-term human presence on the lunar surface.
