Gold and silver prices have experienced significant fluctuations in recent days. Following substantial gains over the past year, which led to record highs, both metals saw a sharp decline on Fri, followed by a further drop on Mon. However, prices partially recovered on Tue, although they remain below peak levels.
Factors Influencing Recent Price Changes
The rising prices of gold and silver over the past year can be attributed to their status as stable investment assets during periods of economic uncertainty and geopolitical instability. The return of Donald Trump to the White House has introduced volatility, impacting market dynamics. His policies, including tariffs and influence on the Federal Reserve, have contributed to a weaker US dollar, prompting investors to seek "safe haven" assets like gold and silver.
Between Trump’s inauguration and the end of Jan 2026, gold prices nearly doubled, and silver prices increased nearly four-fold. Additionally, central banks in emerging economies, particularly China and Turkiye, have been increasing their purchases of gold to reduce reliance on the dollar. On Thu, gold reached nearly $5,595 an ounce, and silver almost $122, before prices dropped sharply by the end of the week.

The recent decline in gold and silver prices has various suggested causes. Some analysts point to Trump's announcement of nominating Kevin Warsh to lead the Federal Reserve as a stabilizing move, leading to a more conventional choice than anticipated. This decision, coupled with potential diplomatic developments with Iran, may have contributed to a perceived stabilization in economic conditions and a stronger dollar, prompting some investors to sell their holdings in precious metals.
Other analysts argue that the price correction was inevitable due to the previously rapid increase, suggesting that profit-taking led to a cascade effect on the market.
Market predictions remain uncertain, though some analysts anticipate continued growth in precious metals over the medium-to-long term. JP Morgan analysts forecast gold to reach $6,300 an ounce by the end of 2026, citing robust investor demand. It is expected that as market stability increases, investor interest in gold and silver will rise, driven by ongoing depreciation of the US dollar and increased gold reserves by central banks.
