LummaStealer, an information-stealing malware, has resurged after a significant law enforcement disruption in 2025. This resurgence is marked by a transition in distribution strategies from traditional exploit kits to aggressive social engineering campaigns.
Cybercriminals are now utilizing "ClickFix" techniques, which involve fake CAPTCHA verification pages to deceive users into executing malicious commands. This approach allows the malware to bypass standard security warnings and protocols.
The malware's delivery infrastructure has evolved to be more resilient and harder to detect. It now employs a sophisticated loader, CastleLoader, instead of relying solely on direct downloads. This loader executes malicious code directly in the computer’s memory to evade antivirus detection, thereby minimizing its digital footprint and complicating forensic analysis.
Bitdefender analysts have identified this renewed activity, emphasizing the critical role of CastleLoader in the infection chain. Their research indicates that the loader is equipped with extensive obfuscation and anti-analysis features.

CastleLoader serves as an intermediary between the initial infection and the deployment of the LummaStealer payload. Delivered as a compiled AutoIt script, a legitimate automation tool abused for masking code, it employs heavy obfuscation techniques to conceal its true purpose. This includes replacing variable names with random words and inserting "dead code" to hinder analysis by automated security tools.
Before retrieving the final payload, CastleLoader conducts environment checks to verify it is running on a real victim's machine rather than a security researcher's isolated sandbox. It inspects the system for specific computer names or usernames often used in test environments. If virtualization software like VMware or VirtualBox is detected, it terminates its process to avoid exposure.
A distinctive feature of CastleLoader is its generation of a failed DNS lookup for a nonexistent domain, creating an "artifact" that defenders can use to identify infections. Once the environment is deemed safe, the malware establishes persistence by copying itself to the local application data folder and creating a startup shortcut, ensuring automatic execution.
To mitigate these threats, users are advised to be cautious of web pages requesting manual verification steps and to avoid pirated software. Keeping security solutions updated remains an effective defense against evolving threats.
