Inter Miami has finalized a new contract with Lionel Messi, ensuring his continued presence at the Major League Soccer club as it prepares for its transition to a new stadium next year. The agreement was announced on Thursday, preceding Inter Miami's playoff opener against Nashville.
The club confirmed that Messi's contract is a three-year deal extending through 2028. This extension is anticipated to enhance ticket sales at the new stadium located near Miami International Airport. Messi, aged 38, is likely signing his final professional contract, having started his career with Barcelona in 2004.
This season, Messi achieved several records, including scoring multiple goals in five consecutive matches, becoming the first MLS player to do so. Additionally, he set a new league record with 10 multigoal games.
The agreement was announced on Thursday, preceding Inter Miami's playoff opener against Nashville.
Since joining Inter Miami in July 2023, Messi has been part of a reunion with former Barcelona teammates Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suarez. Both Busquets and Alba are retiring at the end of the season, while Suarez's future remains uncertain.
Messi's arrival has significantly boosted the club's global popularity, with his No. 10 jersey becoming the top-seller in MLS. Inter Miami won the 2023 Leagues Cup shortly after Messi joined, marking a successful start to his tenure.
David Beckham, Inter Miami co-owner, stated that the club's vision was to bring top players to Miami, a goal achieved by signing Messi. Beckham emphasized Messi's commitment to the city, the club, and the sport, highlighting his continued desire for success.
