Landmines continue to pose a significant threat in the hill forests along Bangladesh's eastern border with Myanmar. Villagers frequently encounter these hidden dangers while conducting daily activities, leading to serious injuries and fatalities.

In early 2025, local resident Ali Hossain, aged 40, suffered a severe injury while collecting firewood, resulting in the loss of his leg due to a landmine explosion. This incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by individuals living near the border.

According to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, Myanmar was identified as the most hazardous country for landmine casualties in 2024. The organization reported over 2,000 casualties in that year alone, a significant increase from the previous year.

Bangladesh's 271 km (168-mile) border with Myanmar remains largely unmarked, comprising dense forests and rivers. This situation complicates efforts to manage and mitigate the risks associated with landmines.

The Bangladesh government attributes the placement of these landmines to Myanmar's military forces and opposing armed groups. These planted explosives have turned previously safe areas into dangerous zones, affecting both local villagers and the significant Rohingya refugee population residing in the region.

To address these threats, Bangladesh's border security forces have implemented several measures, including the installation of warning signs and the execution of regular mine-clearing operations. Despite these efforts, the local population remains vulnerable as their livelihoods often necessitate entering these hazardous areas.

In 2025, at least 28 individuals were injured by landmines, with a border guard tragically losing his life in November due to an explosion.
