This situation resulted in decreased visibility due to a widespread grey haze.
Regulatory Measures and Compliance
The Supreme Court of India recently adjusted the regulations on the use of firecrackers in New Delhi for Diwali, permitting the use of “green firecrackers” developed by federal research institutes. These firecrackers are designed to reduce particulate and gas emissions by approximately 30 percent. Despite these regulations allowing usage during specified hours, compliance was not widely observed.
Pollution Control Initiatives
In response to the increased pollution levels, authorities in Delhi have enacted measures to mitigate air quality issues. These include restrictions on construction activities and the use of diesel generators. However, experts emphasize the necessity for long-term strategies, such as the adoption of cleaner energy solutions and stricter vehicle emissions controls.
