Ceasefire Implementation in Gaza

A ceasefire commenced in Gaza at noon local time on Fri, marking the first cessation of hostilities since March. This development is part of a U.S.-drafted plan aimed at ending the two-year conflict. Following the ceasefire, there was a significant movement of displaced Palestinians returning to northern areas as Israeli forces initiated a partial withdrawal.

The Israeli cabinet approved the ceasefire on Thursday night, activating the initial phase of the U.S. plan. The Israeli military has confirmed troop withdrawal to a predetermined redeployment line, including areas such as eastern Khan Younis.

An official statement indicated that Israel will initially maintain control over 53% of the territory. This decision enabled thousands of Palestinians to begin their return journey to Gaza City, with reports of large crowds moving northward along the coastal road.

The First Phase: Hostages for Prisoners

The initial 72-hour period is pivotal. Under the agreement, Hamas is expected to release the 20 remaining Israeli hostages. In exchange, Israel will release 250 Palestinians serving long-term sentences and 1,700 others detained in Gaza during the conflict.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged “heavy military pressure” and expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for his support in securing the agreement.

Addressing the Humanitarian Crisis

The ceasefire aims to facilitate an increase in aid, with Israel allowing 600 trucks per day to enter—restoring pre-conflict levels. This measure is crucial as malnutrition is widespread, and certain areas of Gaza are experiencing famine, according to food security authorities. Medical teams also plan to utilize the truce to recover bodies trapped under debris.

Challenges Ahead for Permanent Peace

Despite claims from a senior Hamas official that the conflict has ended, significant challenges remain. The broader U.S. plan, which involves disarmament of Hamas and the establishment of an international transitional government in Gaza, still requires extensive negotiations. The ceasefire marks a significant step towards a permanent resolution to a conflict that has resulted in over 67,000 Palestinian casualties and nearly 170,000 injuries, as reported by the Gaza health ministry.
