South Korean e-commerce company Coupang has announced details of an investigation into a data breach impacting 33.7 million customers. The breach, which involved unauthorized access to sensitive user information, led to the disclosure of names, addresses, and phone numbers.
Following the discovery of the breach in late November, Coupang worked under government oversight starting December 1 to track the attacker. The coordinated effort included daily guidance from authorities, including the scripting of communications with the leaker.
On December 14, initial meetings were held, resulting in a confession from the involved party and the collection of critical evidence, including a desktop and hard drives. By December 16, these devices were secured and handed over to government analysts. Further instructions led to the retrieval of a submerged MacBook Air, which was processed and delivered on December 18.
Additional evidence, including hard drives and fingerprinted declarations, was submitted to the police on December 21. Coupang adhered to a government-mandated communication blackout during this period.
