A remote code execution vulnerability in Adobe's Magento platform is being actively targeted by attackers, posing a significant risk to numerous online stores. The flaw, identified as SessionReaper and tracked under CVE-2025-54236 , enables unauthorized access, potentially leading to severe data breaches.
The vulnerability arises from improper input validation within Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source versions up to 2.4.9-alpha2, specifically affecting the Commerce REST API. Discovered by researcher Blaklis and patched by Adobe on Sep 9, 2025, the flaw allows attackers to upload malicious files as session data, bypassing authentication. This can result in full remote code execution, particularly in systems with file-based session storage.
Security firm Sansec has reported over 250 exploitation attempts as of Oct 22, 2025, with attacks sourced from various IP addresses globally. A technical report by Assetnote provided proof-of-concept code, highlighting the critical nature of this vulnerability.
The flaw, identified as SessionReaper and tracked under CVE-2025-54236 , enables unauthorized access, potentially leading to severe data breaches.
The severity of SessionReaper is underscored by its CVSS score of 9.1, comparable to historical Magento threats such as CosmicSting and TrojanOrder. Despite Adobe's release of a patch, adoption has been slow. Sansec reports only 38% of Magento stores have implemented the necessary protections, leaving a majority vulnerable.
Adobe advises immediate deployment of the official patch or upgrading to the latest secure version. For those unable to patch instantly, activating a web application firewall (WAF) is recommended. Sansec Shield has been effective in blocking SessionReaper since its discovery.
Sansec is actively monitoring the situation, providing real-time updates and urging vigilance among store owners to prevent further compromises.
