Artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing police work across the UK. The National Police Chiefs’ Council aims to enhance investigation speed and improve data management through AI, aspiring to position British policing as a leader in responsible AI utilization.
Currently, AI efforts are limited to individual police forces. To advance this, the Accelerated Capability Environment (ACE) was tasked with developing a national model integrating universities, private sector experts, and police teams to leverage research and data tools for crime resolution.
ACE conducted a study with six suppliers to conceptualize a national AI lab, assessing necessary infrastructure, skills, data usage safety, and integration with existing systems. Two workshops were held to explore technology mapping, skill gaps, data regulations, and potential funding models.
Three design options emerged from the study. The bronze option, continuing current small-scale projects, was dismissed. The silver option, addressing policing needs over three years, was deemed feasible. The gold option, proposing a world-class lab within 18 months, was recommended. ACE served as a practical example of lab operation.
An AI lab would facilitate safe testing of new tools by police forces before real-case application, allowing officers to allocate more resources to community engagement rather than routine analysis.

The Home Office’s Public Safety Group engaged ACE to investigate the use of generative AI in criminal activities. GenAI has escalated crimes such as fraud, child sexual abuse material, and fake intimate images, with concerns over its potential to educate users on criminal acts or automate harmful activities. PSG aims to analyze these tools proactively.
ACE mapped the GenAI market to identify products prone to misuse, focusing on four areas: image and video generators like deepfake apps, chatbots for scams or misinformation, voice cloning tools for phone fraud, and predictive analytics software for targeting victims.
The project resulted in a baseline report identifying existing AI products, associated risks, and implemented safety measures, providing PSG with early insights for policy development.
Following the main report, ACE continues to research AI products, providing monthly updates to over 350 law enforcement personnel. The newsletter outlines new AI tools, potential criminal applications, and developed precautions, enhancing awareness of emerging threats.
This ongoing monitoring enables UK policing to adapt responses to technological advancements, ensuring crime prevention remains modern and effective. The Home Office values this effort as crucial for maintaining contemporary crime prevention strategies.
