The milestone occurred during a tense period of planned silence. As the spacecraft swung behind the "dark" side of the Moon—the hemisphere that never faces Earth—communications were temporarily severed. Once signal was restored, the crew confirmed they had successfully executed the maneuver and were beginning their return trajectory.
Scientific Observation and a Personal Tribute
The flyby wasn't merely a record-setting exercise. The crew utilized their position to capture high-resolution imagery of the Orientale basin and the lunar far side, which will be used to scout potential landing sites for the Artemis IV mission, currently slated for 2028.

The mission has not been without its quirks. While the crew is equipped with iPhones—used strictly for photography and video as they lack cellular or Bluetooth connectivity—they have also had to contend with aging hardware.
