Insta360 Aims to Solve the Rear-Camera Selfie Dilemma
For years, smartphone users have faced a frustrating trade-off: use the high-quality rear cameras and fly blind, or use the lower-resolution front camera to see the framing. Insta360 is looking to eliminate that compromise with the Snap, a new magnetic secondary screen that attaches to the back of both Android and iOS devices.
Announced today, the Insta360 Snap acts as a digital mirror, allowing users to preview their shots and control their phone’s interface while facing the primary camera lenses.
Plug-and-Play Functionality
Unlike many third-party accessories that rely on often-unreliable Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connections, the Snap utilizes a physical connection. It features an integrated USB-C cable that supports video output, ensuring a lag-free experience.
The device features a 3.5-inch touchscreen that mirrors the phone's OS. While Android users can jump right in after approving a screen-mirroring prompt, iPhone users must perform a one-time setup by enabling the "Zoom" feature in iOS accessibility settings to unlock touch functionality on the Snap's screen.

Pricing and Illumination
The Snap is launching in two configurations through Insta360’s online store:
- Standard Model: $79.99
- Ring Light Model: $89.99 (includes an integrated light around the screen)
The upgraded version adds approximately 6mm of thickness but provides five brightness levels and three color temperature settings (neutral, cool, and warm). Testing suggests this integrated light is significantly more effective for photography than a standard phone flash.
Performance and Battery Impact
The Snap does not contain an internal battery, drawing power directly from the host smartphone. Insta360 clarifies that users should expect a 15% to 20% drain on their phone's battery during continuous use. However, the trade-off is a device that never needs separate charging and powers on instantly upon being plugged in.
Design Hurdles and Usability
While the Snap offers more versatility than rivals like the Dockcase Selfix—allowing interaction with the entire OS rather than just a camera preview—it isn't without its quirks.
- Aspect Ratio: Because the Snap is shorter than modern smartphones, users must choose between "letterboxed" viewing or a "zoomed" mode that fills the screen but cuts off the top and bottom of the phone interface.
- Handling: One of the primary difficulties remains ergonomics. Holding a phone backward often leads to accidental touches on the phone’s main screen. Insta360 includes a protective cover meant to shield the phone screen during use, but it is currently too small to fully cover larger devices like the iPhone 16 Pro.
The Verdict
Despite some minor software hurdles and the physical awkwardness of holding a phone "inside out," the Insta360 Snap is a powerful tool for content creators. By providing full touchscreen access to any camera app—including Instagram and TikTok—while using the best sensors available on the device, it represents a significant leap forward for mobile photography accessories.
