Intel Joins Forces with Elon Musk for "Terafab" AI Chip Project in Austin
In a major strategic alliance for the future of semiconductor manufacturing, Intel has officially signed on to design and construct the Terafab, Elon Musk’s ambitious AI chip factory located in Austin, Texas.
The announcement, made on Tuesday, identifies Intel as the primary partner tasked with bringing Musk’s vision of a massive silicon fabrication plant to life. The facility is designed to serve as the primary supplier of high-performance AI chips for both Tesla and SpaceX, a company that has recently merged with the AI startup xAI.
Powering a "Robot Army" and Space Centers
Elon Musk’s reliance on specialized semiconductors is central to his long-term roadmap. The chips produced at Terafab will be the cognitive backbone for:
- Tesla’s Autonomous Vehicles: Enhancing the compute power required for Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities.
- Humanoid Robotics: Powering the "robot army" Musk envisions for industrial and domestic use.
- Space-Based Data Centers: Supporting SpaceX’s mission to launch advanced computing infrastructure into orbit.
According to the official Terafab website, the project is intended to "close the gap between today’s chip production and the future’s demand, a future among the stars."

Outsourcing Complexity
The partnership with Intel comes after months of public frustration from Musk regarding the difficulty of chip manufacturing. During an earnings call earlier this year, the billionaire admitted, "it’s very hard to build these things," and questioned whether the global industry could keep pace with burgeoning AI demand.
While Musk is known for his expertise in automotive and aerospace manufacturing, silicon fabrication is a different beast, requiring billions of dollars in capital, specialized lithography equipment, and years of development. By bringing in Intel, Musk shifts the technical burden of "fab" construction to a veteran of the industry.
Intel’s Growing Footprint
Intel is currently navigating its own corporate turnaround, but it remains a powerhouse in domestic manufacturing. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Intel stated that its expertise in designing and packaging ultra-high-performance chips at scale would help Terafab reach an ambitious production target: 1 terawatt (TW) of compute per year.
This project adds to Intel's expanding US footprint, which includes a $20 billion investment in two new fabs in Arizona. The Austin project further solidifies the Southwest United States as a global semiconductor hub, joining Taiwan’s TSMC, which is planning a "Gigafab" north of Phoenix.
Financial and Market Implications
The news arrives at a pivotal moment for Musk’s empire. SpaceX is reportedly planning an Initial Public Offering (IPO) for later this year, making the vertical integration of its AI hardware supply chain a key point for potential investors.
For Intel, the deal provides a high-profile validation of its foundry services as it competes with global rivals to dominate the next era of AI hardware.
