OpenAI has introduced new in-chat applications for ChatGPT, developed with the Apps SDK. These applications enable users to perform various digital tasks such as booking hotels, creating playlists, browsing homes, and designing slides, all within a single chat interface.
Currently, these features are available to users outside the UK and European Union, with plans for broader distribution in the future.
The launch includes partnerships with Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow. Users can, for instance, request ChatGPT to find a hotel in Paris, and the Booking.com app will display real-time listings within the chat. Similarly, Canva can generate a presentation from an outline directly in the chatbot.
The Apps SDK operates on the Model Context Protocol, an open standard that connects ChatGPT to external tools and data, allowing developers to build custom interfaces for their apps. The SDK is open source, facilitating broad application across platforms that adopt this standard.

Developers can integrate their backend systems, enable user logins, and provide access to premium features. Each app must comply with OpenAI's usage policies, be audience-appropriate, and maintain transparent privacy policies detailing data usage. ChatGPT informs users about data usage upon first-time app connections and plans to increase data access control.
OpenAI will soon allow developers to submit and monetize their apps within ChatGPT, with a directory for users to browse and search apps. Additionally, work is underway on an Agentic Commerce Protocol to facilitate instant payments within chats.
OpenAI's integration efforts with ChatGPT are aimed at centralizing digital activities, enabling functionalities such as trip planning, design creation, course study, music streaming, and property searching within a single chat. Future expansions include partnerships with Uber, Target, and DoorDash. The introduction of payment and business tools may further enhance ChatGPT's role as a comprehensive platform for online activities.
