Italian cabinet approves new anti-immigration package

On Wed, Italy's cabinet, under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, approved a new anti-immigration package. This package includes provisions for a potential "naval blockade" and emphasizes stricter border surveillance and cooperation with European agencies. The list of convictions leading to the expulsion of foreigners has also been expanded.

Potential to ban boats from Italian waters for up to six months in cases of significant threats to public order or national security. Authorities can initially ban entry for up to 30 days if a migrant ship poses a serious threat, such as risks of terrorist acts or infiltration. The blockade duration is extendable to a maximum of six months. Measures include stopping ships from entering Italian waters during drastic migrant influxes that could compromise border management. Violators may face fines up to $59,400, and repeated violations could lead to boat confiscation. Intercepted migrants may be transported to third countries with which Italy has specific agreements.

The proposed bill requires discussion and approval by both chambers of the Italian parliament before it can be enacted.
