Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has extended the shutdown of its UK factories until at least Wednesday following a significant cyber attack that has disrupted operations. The production halt commenced after the breach was identified on August 31, affecting major facilities in Halewood, Solihull, and Wolverhampton, with implications for international sites in Slovakia, China, and India.

JLR has decided to shut down its IT systems to contain the attack and protect its infrastructure, leading to the immediate cessation of vehicle production. Under typical conditions, the company produces approximately 1,000 vehicles daily, marking a substantial decrease in output due to the stoppage.

Operational Impact

Production line personnel have been advised to remain at home as JLR collaborates with third-party cybersecurity experts and law enforcement to restore its networks securely. The company, owned by Tata Motors, has not confirmed reports suggesting the disruption may last several weeks.

The shutdown has affected JLR’s supply chain, with some suppliers instructing their staff not to work due to halted production orders. The cyber attack initially prevented JLR dealerships from registering new vehicles or ordering maintenance parts. Although alternative solutions are reportedly in place, the timing coincided with the release of new registration plates on September 1, a peak period for car sales.

Security Breach Details

A group of English-speaking hackers has claimed responsibility for the attack, also linked to a similar incident involving UK retailer M&S. Security experts have reported that the hackers accessed sensitive company information and are attempting to extort money from JLR. The company has acknowledged these claims and confirmed an ongoing investigation.

This incident underscores the increasing threat of financially motivated cyber attacks targeting major industrial sectors.
