The vulnerability, designated as CVE-2024-36424, permits low-privileged users to escalate their permissions, enabling full control over compromised systems.
K7 Ultimate Security utilizes named pipes for communication between software components. These pipes allow programs with limited permissions to request actions from programs with higher permissions.
Researchers discovered that the named pipe, K7TSMngrService1, used by K7, had insufficient access controls. This vulnerability allows any process to send crafted messages, prompting the SYSTEM-level service to perform unauthorized registry changes.
Exploitation can occur in two primary ways. Firstly, an attacker can disable antivirus protection by sending specific commands to the named pipe, including turning off real-time scanning or cloud protection. Secondly, full privilege escalation is achievable via Image File Execution Options (IFEO), allowing attackers to manipulate Windows registry keys that control program startup behavior.

This vulnerability affects K7 Ultimate Security version 17.0.2045 and potentially earlier versions. It is advised that organizations using K7 antivirus update to the latest version immediately.
