U.S. President Donald Trump, while publicly threatening "the death of a civilization," has confirmed that Vice President JD Vance is now a lead negotiator in a desperate backchannel effort to prevent the current conflict with Iran from spiraling into a global catastrophe.
The mediation, spearheaded by Pakistan, seeks to bridge the gap between Washington’s aggressive military posture and Tehran’s deep-seated distrust of American envoys.
The Rise of the Vance Channel
In a formal acknowledgment on Monday, President Trump named JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the principal figures in current negotiations. This marks a significant shift for Vance, who had previously maintained a calculated distance from "Operation Epic Fury," the five-week-old war that has already seen the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and retaliatory strikes on Saudi oil facilities.
According to sources close to the mediation, Vance has emerged as a figure Tehran is actually willing to listen to. While previous negotiators like Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff have been dismissed by Iranian officials as "buying time" for military positioning, Vance is reportedly viewed as more sympathetic to ending the conflict.
Pakistan’s Two-Stage Peace Proposal
Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has served as the primary bridge, reportedly holding direct lines with Vance, Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The "Pakistani Proposal" currently on the table involves a two-stage halt to hostilities:

Despite the optimism in Islamabad, the path remains treacherous. A senior Pakistani official revealed that a Vance-led delegation was prepared to fly to Islamabad for direct talks with Iran twice in the last week, only for Tehran to pull out at the last minute for "internal deliberations."
A Region on the Brink
The urgency of these talks cannot be overstated. Over the weekend, Trump threatened to bomb Iran’s energy infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz—responsible for 20% of global oil flow—is not reopened by Wednesday morning.
The military reality is already grim:

Why Tehran is Hesitant
The shadow of "betrayal" hangs over the negotiating table. In February, indirect talks in Geneva led by Oman appeared to show "unprecedented progress" toward a nuclear deal. However, two days later, the U.S. and Israel launched the campaign that decapitated Iran’s leadership.
"There is a feeling among Iranian officials that pre-war negotiations were essentially a ruse," says Javad Heiran-Nia, director of the Persian Gulf Studies Group. He notes that while the IRGC has gained power since Khamenei’s death, there is a factional opening for Vance due to his perceived isolationist leanings compared to the traditional hawks in the administration.
As of Tuesday night, Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, described Islamabad’s "good offices" as reaching a "critical, sensitive stage." Whether Vance’s influence can outweigh Trump’s "apocalyptic rhetoric" will be determined in the coming hours.
