Meta will implement updates to its advertising and content recommendation systems based on user interactions with AI products. This change is set to commence on Sat, Dec 16, 2023, with user notifications starting on Sat, Oct 7, 2023, through in-app alerts and emails.
Meta confirmed that user interactions with AI tools, including chatbots and voice-based systems, will be integrated into their advertising targeting mechanisms. For instance, discussing travel with Meta AI could result in increased visibility of ads related to flights, accommodation, or travel guides.
The update will be applied to linked accounts within the Meta Accounts Centre. However, if a WhatsApp account is not connected, conversations on WhatsApp will not influence recommendations on other Meta platforms.
Users will retain control over their ad preferences and feed settings, allowing them to adjust what content is displayed. Additionally, users can choose between text or voice interactions with AI, with microphones only activated upon user permission and when necessary for specific features. An indicator light will signal when recording is active.

Meta assures that conversations involving sensitive topics such as religion, sexuality, politics, health, or union membership will not be utilized for ad targeting, in line with existing privacy policies.
Notifications regarding the update will be disseminated starting Sat, Oct 7, 2023, on Facebook and Instagram, as well as via email. The full implementation is scheduled for Sat, Dec 16, 2023.
The rollout will initially cover most regions, with plans for broader availability to follow. Users seeking additional information on data handling can access the Privacy Center or review the updated policy.
The update aims to enhance the relevance of Meta's applications by incorporating AI interaction data in a manner similar to likes, follows, and searches. With over 1 billion monthly users of Meta AI, this offers a substantial data set for refining advertising strategies.
