Microsoft has announced a significant update to its encryption technology with the introduction of hardware-accelerated BitLocker. This advancement aims to address performance limitations experienced with high-speed storage drives, allowing users to maintain robust security without compromising system speed.

BitLocker has been a standard for data protection on Windows systems. However, advancements in Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) technology have outpaced the ability of the central processing unit (CPU) to efficiently encrypt and decrypt data in real-time, leading to system slowdowns.

To mitigate this, Microsoft's latest solution transfers encryption tasks from the CPU to a dedicated cryptographic engine within the system on a chip (SoC). This "crypto offloading" reduces the processor's workload, enhancing user experience and battery life.

The new hardware-accelerated BitLocker introduces the following capabilities:

Crypto Offloading: Encrypting tasks are shifted from the CPU to a dedicated engine, reducing CPU usage by up to 70% compared to traditional software BitLocker. Hardware-Protected Keys: Encryption keys are now protected within the SoC, enhancing security against memory-based attacks.

Feature How It Works

Crypto Offloading Shifts encryption tasks from the CPU to a dedicated cryptographic engine on the SoC.

Hardware-Protected Keys Encryption keys are secured by the SoC, not stored in system memory.

Default XTS-AES-256 Automatically selects the XTS-AES-256 algorithm on compatible hardware.

Admin Verification The manage-bde -status command has been updated to detect and report this mode.

These features are available starting with the Windows 11 update in September 2025 (version 24H2) and the forthcoming Windows 11 25H2 release. Initial support will be provided for Intel vPro devices with Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors. Future expansions will include additional hardware vendors.

Users with compatible systems can verify the activation of this feature by using the manage-bde -status command. If enabled, the "Encryption Method" will indicate "Hardware-accelerated."
