British organizations are currently experiencing a significant cybersecurity challenge, as reported by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). The frequency of cyber attacks targeting the UK's digital infrastructure has increased, with an average of four major incidents occurring weekly.
During the reporting period, the NCSC managed 429 incidents, 18 of which were classified as highly significant due to their potential to disrupt essential services nationwide. The data indicates that Advanced Persistent Threat actors, including nation-state operatives and sophisticated criminal organizations, were responsible for a substantial portion of the incidents.
In the year ending September 2025, the NCSC handled 204 nationally significant cyber attacks, more than double the 89 incidents from the previous year. This marks a nearly 50% increase in highly significant incidents, continuing a three-year trend of rising attack severity.
In response to the rising threat and following several high-profile incidents, the government has engaged with business leaders across the UK's largest corporations. Chief executives and chairs of FTSE350 companies have been advised on the importance of collaboration between government and business sectors to protect the UK economy.
