The Louvre Museum has resumed operations three days following a significant robbery incident. The reopening on Wed, Oct 22, 2025, precedes an inquiry by French senators regarding the theft of jewels valued at an estimated €88 million ($102 million).

The robbery has intensified scrutiny on the security protocols of French museums, particularly following recent thefts at two other institutions. Investigations suggest an organized crime group executed the heist by using a ladder to gain access to the museum. The stolen items include historically significant pieces such as an emerald-and-diamond necklace from Napoleon I and a diadem adorned with nearly 2,000 diamonds. A crown was left behind during the escape.

The ongoing investigation involves over 100 personnel, as confirmed by Interior Minister Laurent Nunez. Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau emphasized the cultural loss to France, in addition to the financial impact. Four suspects have been identified, and efforts to map the network of individuals involved are underway.

In response to the incident, President Emmanuel Macron has mandated an expedited review of the Louvre's security measures. The museum, which welcomed nine million visitors last year, has faced challenges with security staffing following reductions over the past 15 years, as noted by union representative Christian Galani.

Museum director Laurence des Cars, the first woman to hold this position, is expected to address security concerns, particularly regarding the Apollo Gallery where the theft occurred.

The museum's reopening saw a significant turnout of visitors, although the Apollo Gallery remains temporarily closed. The Louvre remains a prominent cultural institution, with its collection, including the renowned Mona Lisa, drawing global attention.
