A recent study published in Nature Climate Change on Mon, May 7, 2025, highlights the potential loss of thousands of glaciers annually in the coming decades unless global warming is mitigated. The study indicates that without immediate government action, the planet could reach a state termed "peak glacier extinction" by midcentury, with up to 4,000 glaciers melting each year.
Current Glacier Statistics and Projections
Currently, approximately 200,000 glaciers exist worldwide, with around 750 disappearing each year. The study suggests that if global temperatures increase by 4 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial levels, this rate could rise significantly, leaving only 18,288 glaciers by the end of the century.
Even if governments adhere to the Paris Agreement target of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the world could still lose 2,000 glaciers annually by 2041. This scenario would result in over half of the planet's glaciers vanishing by 2100.

The United Nations Environment Programme recently reported that global warming is likely to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius within the coming years. Even if countries meet their climate pledges, the planet could experience a temperature increase of 2.3 to 2.5 degrees Celsius by century's end.
The study's publication coincides with the conclusion of the UN's International Year of Glacier Preservation, emphasizing the critical need for robust climate policies. The report states that the number of glaciers lost annually by midcentury, whether 2,000 or 4,000, will depend on near-term policy decisions and societal actions.
Coauthor Matthias Huss, a glacier expert at ETH Zurich, emphasized the broader significance of glacier loss, noting its impact beyond scientific realms.
