The arrests occur amidst allegations of a Russian network of spies and saboteurs operating across Europe. The coordinator of Poland’s special services, Tomasz Siemoniak, stated that the individuals are suspected of espionage and planning attacks, including reconnaissance of military facilities, preparing resources for sabotage, and executing attacks.
Poland has previously been targeted in what officials describe as a "hybrid war" conducted by Russia to destabilize nations supporting Ukraine. Other European countries have also accused Moscow of similar activities following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Over the past three years, Polish authorities have detained numerous individuals on suspicions of sabotage and espionage.
