Security Update: Arrest in Potential Terrorist Plot

Federal authorities in the United States have charged an 18-year-old with planning a potential terrorist attack in Mint Hill, North Carolina. The suspect, Christian Sturdivant, a resident of Mint Hill, allegedly targeted a grocery store and a fast-food restaurant.

According to the US Attorney’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Sturdivant was apprehended on New Year’s Eve, the date of the planned attack. He is charged with "attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organisation" and faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The arrest resulted from a multiyear investigation into Sturdivant, who was identified as a prolific social media user. Initial attention from the FBI began in 2022 when he attempted to contact the terrorist group ISIL (ISIS) via social media. Recent communication included a loyalty oath to ISIL and requests for firearms.

Authorities reported that a search of Sturdivant’s home revealed hammers and knives, as well as notes detailing attack plans. The FBI maintained 24/7 surveillance, including during holidays, due to the seriousness of the threat.

This arrest underscores the ongoing efforts of the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) in preventing potential terrorist activities. The FBI Director commended the task force's actions, highlighting the importance of collaboration in ensuring public safety.

Sturdivant, who had previously been employed at a local Burger King, made contact with undercover officers from the New York Police Department and the FBI, further substantiating the charges against him.
