A suspect has been apprehended in connection with the placement of pipe bombs near two political headquarters in Washington, DC, on the night before the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Justice identified the suspect as Brian Cole Jr. in a joint news conference on Thursday, Dec 4, 2025.

Darren Cox, a deputy assistant director in the FBI, emphasized the extensive data analysis involved in the investigation, which included reviewing "3 million lines of data." Despite the complexity, the FBI persisted in their efforts.

FBI Director Kash Patel stated that a new team of investigators reexamined all evidence, an initiative not undertaken by the previous administration. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced that Cole would be charged with transporting an illegal explosive device and attempting malicious destruction by means of explosive materials. She indicated that the investigation is ongoing and that further charges may be filed.

Technical Aspects of the Investigation

The investigation involved matching pipe bomb components with similar parts available in the market. Pirro highlighted the challenge of tracing 233,000 black end caps used in the bombs, alongside other components like pipes, cap ends, wires, steel, and nine-volt batteries. Despite these challenges, officials asserted that critical evidence was present from the beginning but was not acted upon by the previous administration.

The arrest concludes a nearly five-year investigation into an incident that underscored the threat of political violence in the US. The bombs, although viable, did not detonate and thus did not cause harm. Cox reiterated the potential danger these devices posed, emphasizing their capacity to cause injury and property damage, as well as to instill fear in the community.

The pipe bombs were allegedly placed near the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee. Early surveillance footage captured the suspect, believed to be male, wearing a mask, gloves, and a grey hoodie. This incident occurred just before supporters of President Trump breached the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, an event intended to disrupt the certification of the 2020 election results.
