Bangladesh has initiated its national electoral process, the first since the 2024 uprising that led to the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The elections are scheduled for Mon, Feb 12, 2026. Major political parties have commenced campaign rallies in Dhaka.
Interim Government and Election Oversight
The interim government, led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, aims to conduct free and fair elections. This electoral event is regarded as significant in Bangladesh's history, with the European Union describing it as the largest democratic process of 2026. Bangladesh, with a population of approximately 170 million, will elect 350 lawmakers and vote on proposed political reforms.
Muhammad Yunus, known for his work with Grameen Bank, has highlighted the challenges of inheriting a "completely broken" political system. He assumed the role of "chief adviser" in 2024, following a return from exile, and plans to step down following the elections.
The interim government has introduced the July National Charter, emphasizing reforms to prevent a return to authoritarian governance. This charter includes measures such as enhancing presidential authority, implementing term limits for legislators, and addressing conflicts of interest, money laundering, and corruption. A referendum on these reforms will coincide with the election date.

The Jamaat-e-Islami party is leading a 10-party alliance aiming to increase its influence. Historically criticized by secular groups, Jamaat-e-Islami seeks to present itself as a new alternative in the political landscape.
Yunus has expressed concerns about the proliferation of disinformation from both foreign and local sources on social media platforms. This issue has been exacerbated by strained relations with India following Hasina's refuge in New Delhi.
