Morales, who served as Bolivia's president from 2006 until 2019, explained that his absence was due to complications from chikungunya, a mosquito-borne illness. He assured supporters of his commitment to remain in Bolivia despite legal challenges under the current administration.
Morales faces an arrest warrant on charges of human trafficking, which he denies. In December, former President Luis Arce was arrested in connection with a corruption investigation related to his tenure as economy minister under Morales.
