A verdict in the trial of Hong Kong media figure Jimmy Lai is scheduled for Mon, Dec 15, 2025. The hearing, led by a three-judge panel, will begin at 10:00 am local time (02:00 GMT). Lai, who has been imprisoned for five years, faces charges under the national security law imposed by Chinese authorities in 2020.
The court session will be attended by Lai's supporters, who began queuing overnight to secure one of the 507 available tickets. Of these, 58 tickets are allocated for direct courtroom access, while the remaining are for an overflow room with a video link. Security measures include the deployment of numerous police officers around the courthouse.
Jimmy Lai, aged 78, is the former owner of the Apple Daily newspaper, which is now closed. He was arrested under the national security law, which was enacted to address anti-government protests in Hong Kong in 2019. Lai's family has reported a decline in his health, citing conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart issues, worsened by prolonged solitary confinement.
A verdict in the trial of Hong Kong media figure Jimmy Lai is scheduled for Mon, Dec 15, 2025.
Several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, alongside various rights organizations, have criticized the trial as politically motivated and have advocated for Lai's release. Meanwhile, the Chinese and Hong Kong governments maintain that the trial is fair and in accordance with the national security law.
If convicted, Lai could face sentencing soon after the verdict. There is an option for him to appeal the decision.
