Denmark's Position on Greenland Amid US Interest

Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has stated that any attempt by the United States to gain control over Greenland could lead to significant consequences for the NATO military alliance. This statement follows recent military actions by the United States in Venezuela.

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his interest in bringing Greenland under US jurisdiction, mentioning his intention to discuss the matter further in the coming days. Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of Denmark, holds strategic importance and is part of NATO.

The recent US military actions in Venezuela have raised concerns in Denmark and Greenland.

Prime Minister Frederiksen emphasized that any military aggression by the United States towards a NATO country would have severe implications for the alliance’s security arrangements. This stance underscores the importance of NATO's role since the end of World War II.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has been appointed as a special envoy to Greenland, supporting the US interest in the territory. Additionally, a recent social media post by Katie Miller, featuring Greenland in the colors of the US flag, was described as "disrespectful" by Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

Greenland's location is significant for US ballistic missile defense systems and its mineral resources are of interest to Washington, aiming to diversify away from Chinese exports.

Prime Minister Nielsen reassured citizens that the country is not for sale and emphasized the importance of mutual respect and adherence to international law in international relations. He stressed that Greenland seeks cooperative relations and does not anticipate an immediate threat of takeover.
