Recently, British police conducted a search of Royal Lodge as part of an investigation into whether Mountbatten-Windsor, while serving as the UK's trade envoy, shared confidential government information with Jeffrey Epstein. Mountbatten-Windsor was briefly detained for suspicion of misconduct in public office but was released without charge.
Documents from the United States Department of Justice reveal that Royal Lodge was a venue for financial meetings involving Epstein. Emails from 2009 to 2011 indicate that Mountbatten-Windsor participated in these meetings during his tenure as a British trade envoy.
On Mon, Aug 30, 2010, Mountbatten-Windsor hosted a meeting at Royal Lodge, as indicated in email exchanges. The emails suggest that Sarah Ferguson, referred to as "F", and Mountbatten-Windsor, referred to as "PA", were involved in these discussions, which included financial strategy advice from Epstein.
Additional emails from July 2010 also reference financial discussions at Royal Lodge. These communications provide insight into the use of the residence for coordinated financial discussions involving Epstein while Mountbatten-Windsor was engaged in representing British commercial interests.

Trade Envoy Role and International Engagements
Correspondence from February 2010 shows Epstein's involvement in discussions about international commercial engagements, including a reference to David Stern, who had interactions with both Ferguson and Mountbatten-Windsor. Despite Mountbatten-Windsor's assertion that he cut ties with Epstein in 2010, subsequent emails suggest continued interactions.
In October 2013, Epstein communicated with David Stern regarding a potential dinner hosted by Mountbatten-Windsor. In April 2017, further discussions about a dinner at Windsor Castle were documented.
British authorities are examining whether any criminal offense occurred related to the sharing of official material with Epstein. There have been no arrests concerning sexual allegations against Mountbatten-Windsor, although allegations have been made and a financial settlement was reached with Virginia Giuffre in 2022.
On Thu, Oct 30, 2025, Buckingham Palace announced Mountbatten-Windsor's decision to vacate Royal Lodge due to ongoing scrutiny over his ties with Epstein. Although eligible for financial compensation for surrendering his lease, it was determined that the property's condition precluded any payout. Mountbatten-Windsor relocated to Wood Farm at the Sandringham estate in February 2026.
Royal Lodge currently remains unoccupied.
