Robert Mueller was appointed as director of the FBI by then-President George Bush in September 2001, shortly before the 9/11 attacks. During his tenure, he played a significant role in transforming the FBI's focus from crime fighting to addressing national security risks. Mueller stepped down from the FBI in 2013.
In 2017, he was appointed as special counsel to oversee the Justice Department's investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 United States election.
