According to General Oscar Arriola, Peru’s police chief, officer Luis Magallanes has been detained and dismissed for allegedly firing the fatal bullet. Magallanes is currently receiving medical treatment after being assaulted.
The protests began a month ago with demands for improved pensions and wages for young people but have since expanded to address broader issues of crime and corruption. Ruiz’s death marks the first casualty of these protests.

Newly appointed Interior Minister, Vicente Tiburcio, reported that the recent protests resulted in injuries to 89 police officers and 22 civilians, with 11 individuals detained.
