The Presidents of the United States and Russia, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, have agreed to convene for discussions concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The meeting is scheduled to take place in Budapest within the next two weeks, following a productive phone call between the leaders.
Prior to the scheduled meeting, President Trump is set to meet with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington, DC. During this meeting, discussions are expected to focus on Ukraine's request for Tomahawk missiles, which could enhance its defense capabilities.
Trump has indicated that senior officials from the United States and Russia will have preparatory meetings next week to facilitate the forthcoming discussions between him and Putin. This recent call marks the first communication between the two leaders since their meeting in August in Alaska.
President Zelenskyy has emphasized that "strength and justice" are necessary to bring Russia to negotiations, particularly in light of Ukraine's interest in acquiring Tomahawk missiles.
Russian military operations continue in Ukraine, with recent attacks targeting infrastructure, including energy facilities. As a result, eight Ukrainian regions experienced power outages, and natural gas infrastructure has sustained damage.

Ukraine's Request for Tomahawk Missiles
President Zelenskyy has articulated the strategic advantage of having long-range strike capabilities to potentially influence President Putin toward negotiations. The Tomahawk cruise missiles, with a range of approximately 1,600 kilometers, are seen as a critical asset.
During their call, Trump and Putin did not extensively discuss the provision of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. However, Trump has indicated a cautious approach, emphasizing the need to maintain sufficient military resources for the United States.
Putin has warned that supplying such missiles to Ukraine would escalate the conflict. Nonetheless, Trump has previously remarked on the potential consideration of this military support, contingent on the progression of diplomatic efforts.
Recent diplomatic efforts, including a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, have been highlighted as an example of successful conflict resolution. Both Trump and Zelenskyy have expressed hope that similar diplomatic momentum can be applied to the conflict in Ukraine.
Following their August meeting in Alaska, President Trump has intensified diplomatic pressure on global leaders, including a recent commitment from India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi to cease purchasing Russian oil.
