Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is currently engaged in discussions with leaders and officials from approximately 30 countries. These talks aim to secure more favorable terms in ongoing peace negotiations with Russia, as the conflict enters its fourth year.

Ukraine is encountering significant pressure from Russian forces in the eastern Donetsk region. Concurrently, there is diplomatic pressure from the United States.

On Thursday, a meeting was held following discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. This group, referred to as the "coalition of the willing," seeks to influence peace negotiations. European governments are concerned about their own security amidst these negotiations.

President Trump has advocated for a swift resolution to the conflict, which has persisted along a long front line in eastern Ukraine, with frequent attacks by Russia and retaliatory strikes by Ukraine. Post-discussion, Trump emphasized the need for Zelenskyy to be realistic regarding territorial concessions.

Despite these pressures, Zelenskyy has reiterated that Ukraine will not cede territory, a stance supported by the nation's constitution.

Chancellor Merz has described the current situation as a "crucial moment" for Ukraine, emphasizing ongoing efforts to refine the peace plan. After meeting with NATO chief Mark Rutte, Merz characterized discussions as "constructive" and focused on potential territorial concessions Ukraine might consider. Merz noted that these decisions are ultimately for the Ukrainian leadership and people to make.

The negotiations have highlighted disagreements over potential territorial concessions. Russia currently controls all of Luhansk province and significant portions of Donetsk, as well as parts of Zaporizhia and Kherson, forming a corridor along Ukraine's Black Sea coast. According to the Institute for the Study of War, Russia has gained 0.77 percent of Ukraine's territory in 2025, indicating relative stabilization of front lines.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov mentioned that Russia has provided additional proposals to the U.S. regarding security guarantees, although details remain undisclosed.

Military Developments in Eastern Ukraine

Russian forces continue to exert pressure on the city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk, deploying approximately 156,000 soldiers. Ukraine reported a significant mechanized assault involving a 30-vehicle convoy, marking the largest such attack in the area to date. Capturing Pokrovsk would represent a significant territorial gain for Russia.

The Russian offensive in Pokrovsk has resulted in considerable losses, with Ukraine reporting the destruction of over 1,000 armored vehicles and more than 500 tanks since October 2023.

Ukraine demonstrated its military capabilities with a large-scale drone attack, causing temporary closures of Moscow's airports. The Russian Ministry of Defence reported intercepting 287 Ukrainian drones.

President Trump's peace initiatives have led to tensions with the U.S. Congress, which recently passed a defense spending bill aimed at bolstering European security. This legislation allocates $400 million in security assistance for Ukraine and maintains U.S. troop levels in Europe at a minimum of 76,000 personnel.

Ukrainian officials have submitted a revised peace plan to the U.S. Zelenskyy indicated plans to coordinate with European countries on a bilateral basis in the upcoming week.
