Summoning of US Ambassador Over Comments on Activist's Death

The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has announced the summoning of US Ambassador Charles Kushner following comments from the US embassy regarding the recent death of a far-right activist in Lyon. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot confirmed this action in a statement.

The Ministry has not specified the date for Ambassador Kushner's summoning.

The incident involves the death of Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old activist, who succumbed to head injuries sustained during a demonstration in Lyon on February 12, 2026. This event has escalated political tensions as France approaches its next presidential election. The demonstration was against an appearance by a left-wing politician from the France Unbowed (LFI) party.

The US administration, under President Donald Trump, has described the incident as an act of terrorism. Sarah Rogers, from the US Department of State, emphasized the severity of political violence, labeling it as terrorism.

The State Department's bureau of counterterrorism highlighted the threat posed by violent radical leftism, connecting it to Deranque’s death. The US embassy in France shared this statement in French.

The incident has also led to diplomatic tensions between France and Italy. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni commented on the incident, calling it a concern for Europe, which led to a critical response from French President Emmanuel Macron.

Authorities have charged six individuals in connection with the assault on Deranque. Additionally, a parliamentary assistant to a far-left MP has been charged with complicity.
