UN Calls for Protection of Civilians in Sudan
The United Nations has issued an urgent appeal for the protection and safe passage of civilians in Sudan’s el-Fasher. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group has claimed control over this besieged city.
UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher reported significant civilian casualties and forced displacement in North Darfur’s capital.
Humanitarian Situation in el-Fasher
The RSF has maintained a siege on el-Fasher for approximately 18 months, aiming to capture the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in Darfur. This conflict has trapped around 250,000 civilians and forced many more to flee.
Fletcher emphasized the dire conditions, stating civilians are trapped without access to healthcare, food, or safety. He has called for unimpeded humanitarian access and a ceasefire across Sudan.
Escalation Concerns
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted a “terrible escalation” in Sudan’s civil war, which began in April 2023. He urged countries involved in the conflict to cease actions that undermine peace efforts.
RSF’s Control in Darfur
The capture of el-Fasher by RSF could mark a significant shift in Sudan’s civil war, which has resulted in widespread casualties and humanitarian needs.
The RSF has been accused of committing atrocities in el-Fasher. The Sudan Doctors Network reported killings of unarmed civilians, though these claims have not been independently verified.
Minni Minnawi, Darfur’s governor, has called for civilian protection and an independent investigation into alleged RSF violations. Meanwhile, Sudan’s Information Minister has denied RSF advances, labeling them as psychological tactics.
