Security Update: Arrests in Drone-Mounted Explosive Plot

Belgian authorities have arrested three individuals linked to a plot involving drone-mounted explosives targeting Prime Minister Bart De Wever and other political figures. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation citing charges of “attempted terrorist murder and participation in the activities of a terrorist group.”

Investigation Details

According to the Federal Prosecutor, evidence suggests the suspects planned a jihadist-inspired attack utilizing drones. Investigative findings indicate efforts to construct a drone capable of carrying an explosive payload.

While specific targets were not disclosed, social media communications from government officials suggest Prime Minister De Wever was among the intended targets. Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prevot and Defence Minister Theo Francken have publicly expressed their support for the Prime Minister and gratitude to the security services for their prompt action.

Evidence and Arrests

Police investigations led to the discovery of explosives, including an improvised explosive device under construction, a bag of steel balls, and a 3D printer in an Antwerp location near De Wever’s residence. Authorities believe these materials were intended for the construction of a drone with an explosive capability.

The suspects, born in 2001, 2002, and 2007, remain largely unidentified. One has been released, while the remaining two are scheduled to appear before an investigating judge on Friday, Oct 10, 2025.

Prime Minister De Wever has been previously targeted in similar threats, with a Belgian court convicting five individuals earlier this year for plotting an attack against him.
