Greta Thunberg Denounces Trump’s “Annihilation” Rhetoric as Generational Divide Over Iran War Deepens

The specter of total war Loomed over the Middle East this Tuesday as U.S. President Donald Trump issued a chilling ultimatum against Iran, sparking a fierce backlash from international activists and highlighting a stark generational rift in American public opinion.

As the United States weighed a full-scale assault on Iranian civilian infrastructure, President Trump warned that "a whole civilization will die tonight." The rhetoric drew a blistering response from Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who accused world leaders and the public of "normalizing genocide."

"What the f*** is anyone even doing?"

In an emotional video posted to Instagram shortly before a ceasefire was announced, Thunberg expressed her disbelief at the lack of immediate global outcry.

"The president of the United States just said that a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again," Thunberg said. "And no one is reacting. This speaks for itself."

Linking the threat of war to her previous advocacy for climate action and human rights in Gaza, Thunberg argued that society has reached a dangerous level of passivity. She warned that the "systematic destruction of the biosphere" and the "annihilation of entire people" are being treated as the status quo, allowing "racist war criminals" to act with impunity.

A Generation at Odds with Intervention

Thunberg’s outrage mirrors a growing trend among Generation Z. Recent polling data suggests that young Americans are significantly more skeptical of the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran than their older counterparts.

A Pew Research Center poll released Tuesday revealed a massive disparity in how different age groups view the conflict:

• Nuclear Skepticism: Among Republicans over 65, 67% believe the war will prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Among Republicans aged 18 to 29, that number plummets to just 25%.
• Humanitarian Concerns: Only 7% of older Republican voters believe the war will leave the Iranian people worse off, compared to 28% of younger GOP voters.
• The Democratic Split: 60% of young Democrats believe Iranians will suffer long-term damage from the war, while only 48% of Democrats over 65 share that concern.

The Shadow of the "War on Terror"

Analysts point to the historical context of Gen Z’s upbringing as a primary driver of this skepticism. Growing up during the protracted and often criticized wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, many young adults have developed an isolationist stance toward foreign intervention.

A December 2025 Pew poll found that only 39% of those aged 18-29 believe the U.S. should take an active role in world affairs, a sharp contrast to the 73% of seniors who support global intervention.

Furthermore, internal support for President Trump’s strategy appears shaky within his own base. According to Politico, only 49% of "MAGA Republicans" under the age of 35 believe the President has a coherent plan for the war, compared to 70% of those over 35.

From Gaza to Tehran

The current outcry following Trump's threats follows months of activism regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Thunberg herself has been a frequent critic of the war in Gaza; she was notably detained and deported by Israeli forces in October 2025 while participating in a humanitarian aid flotilla.

As the February 28 outbreak of hostilities continues to reshape global politics, the data suggests that for the youngest generation of voters, the era of unquestioned military intervention may be coming to an end.

"We have allowed far too much so far," Thunberg concluded in her address. "But it is not too late to say stop."
