New research conducted by The Global Payroll Alliance (GPA) indicates a substantial increase in the online search interest for employee redundancy rights and pay in the UK. Since the Autumn Budget in October 2024, there has been a 77% rise in such searches.
In the April 2025 Autumn Budget, the Labour government raised the National Living Wage (NLW) and Employer National Insurance Contributions (NICs), resulting in increased staffing costs for UK businesses. Consequently, many businesses have opted to reduce their workforce to maintain profitability. The GPA's prior analysis showed a reduction of 335,000 PAYE employees since the Autumn Statement.
Increased Searches for Redundancy Rights
GPA's analysis of Google Search Interest Scores for terms related to redundancy and job hunting has shown a significant rise since the Autumn Budget. Between October 2024 and April 2025, searches for "redundancy rights" increased by 76.8%. The term "redundancy" saw a 13.2% rise, and "redundancy pay" increased by 10.7%.
Data also indicates a growing interest in job searches. Since October 2024, there has been a 5.8% increase in searches for "job vacancy" and a 4.7% rise for "job near me."
Melanie Pizzey, CEO of the Global Payroll Alliance, noted the significant impact of the Labour government's decision to increase the living wage and employer NICs on UK businesses, especially smaller ones that struggle to absorb increased staffing costs. She highlighted the lack of prior warning and the rapid implementation of these policies, which have left employers and employees seeking clarity and information.
Since the Autumn Budget in October 2024, there has been a 77% rise in such searches.
