PICO has introduced its next-generation operating system, PICO OS 6, designed for early access by developers. This system represents a fundamental reconstruction of spatial operating systems, allowing seamless integration of 2D apps, 3D experiences, virtual environments, and physical reality. As of Mon, Mar 2, 2026, developers can begin utilizing tools within PICO OS 6 to create applications for the upcoming Project Swan headset, set to launch later this year.
The key innovation in PICO OS 6 is the PICO Spatial Engine, which overhauls traditional graphics processing by moving the rendering pipeline to the OS level. This unified rendering architecture enables simultaneous rendering of 2D apps, 3D objects, virtual environments, and physical reality, ensuring responsiveness and harmony among multiple applications.
Building on the PICO Spatial Engine, PICO OS 6 supports spatial multitasking. Users can engage with complex 3D models alongside colleagues, while keeping browsers and notes active. The system adapts to various input methods, including simple gestures, XR controllers, or traditional keyboards and mice, providing a versatile digital workspace for enterprise collaboration.
Emphasizing openness, PICO OS 6 supports multiple app ecosystems, including Spatial apps, OpenXR, WebXR, Android apps, Web apps, and PC VR streaming. This framework unifies diverse ecosystems into a seamless user experience, lowering barriers to entry for developers.

Project Swan, set for global release in late 2026, addresses industry bottlenecks with advanced MicroOLED displays offering a pixel density of nearly 4000 PPI and an average PPD of 40. The hardware features a dual-chip design for managing mixed reality, including a custom XR silicon chip and a flagship SoC, significantly enhancing CPU and GPU performance.
PICO has launched the "PICO Global Early Access Program" to gather technical feedback from experienced users for Project Swan and PICO OS 6. This initiative aims to ensure the new OS and hardware meet high standards of performance and compatibility.
