The WMO has identified 2024 as the hottest year on record for the Arab region. The rate of warming has accelerated significantly over the past decade, accompanied by more frequent and intense heatwaves, droughts, extreme rainfall, and storms.
The "State of the Climate in the Arab Region" report highlights that temperatures in the area are rising at twice the global average. This trend exacerbates ongoing socio-economic challenges, including rapid urbanization, conflict, poverty, and population growth. The report emphasizes the urgent need for resilience building and investment in risk reduction and water security.

According to WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo, "2024 was the hottest year on record for the Arab region – a continuation of a long-term trend. Temperatures are rising at twice the global average, with intense heatwaves pushing society to the limit. Human health, ecosystems, and economies can't cope with extended periods of more than 50 °C. Droughts are becoming more frequent and severe in one of the world’s most water-stressed regions. At the same time, we have seen some disruptive and dangerous deluges."
The report was compiled by the WMO in collaboration with the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia and the League of Arab States. It aims to inform decision-making in this climate-vulnerable region, which includes 15 of the world's most water-scarce countries.
