While these tools offer speed, control, and convenience, they have also become a target for cybercriminals. The same features that make RMM tools valuable also make them vulnerable entry points in the current threat landscape.
According to the Huntress 2026 Cyber Threat Report, there has been a 277% increase in the misuse of RMM tools in 2025. Attackers now exploit these tools to gain unauthorized access to systems, moving beyond traditional external malware attacks.
By leveraging legitimate, pre-installed remote management software, attackers can obtain hands-on-keyboard access to target environments without triggering immediate security alerts.
Huntress analysts have identified a key issue: valid RMM binaries often evade detection by standard security products, as they do not exhibit typical malicious signatures like ransomware or remote access trojans (RATs).
While these tools offer speed, control, and convenience, they have also become a target for cybercriminals.
In over 50% of cases involving suspicious Atera RMM activity, ransomware attacks were directly implicated. Once attackers compromise an RMM tool, they can execute commands, automate tasks, navigate networks, and deploy ransomware swiftly.
The 2026 Cyber Threat Report indicates that the misuse of tools such as RustDesk or Atera can result in ransomware deployment within one to two hours, enabling attackers to blend in as trusted administrators while dismantling defenses internally.
Attackers capitalize on organizational trust in approved tools. IT teams often assume that activities conducted through allowed tools are secure, which attackers exploit. For instance, using stolen RMM credentials, a threat actor accessed a managed service provider's environment and attempted to disable security measures to evade detection.
In supply chain scenarios, a compromised MSP account can impact multiple organizations simultaneously. It is crucial for defenders to monitor user connections, timings, and locations, investigating sessions that deviate from established baselines.
Organizations should maintain an inventory of approved RMM tools, including executable hashes and connection endpoints, to trigger alerts for unfamiliar activities. Regular security awareness training is essential for mitigating phishing threats, ensuring employees can identify and report suspicious activities promptly.
