The United States government has implemented a ban on federal agencies from utilizing technology developed by Anthropic, a domestic AI company known for its model, Claude. This marks the first instance of a U.S. firm being classified as a supply chain risk to national security, a designation previously reserved for foreign companies.
On Tue, Feb 28, 2026, the decision was announced, mandating all federal agencies to immediately discontinue the use of Anthropic’s technology. Departments such as the Department of War (DoW), which heavily rely on Claude, have been allocated a six-month period to phase out the AI.
The Secretary of Defense has declared Anthropic a national security risk, prohibiting any contractor or supplier engaged with the U.S. military from conducting business with the company.
The ban arises from Anthropic's refusal to provide the Pentagon with unrestricted access to Claude. Anthropic has requested two exceptions regarding the government’s use of its AI: exclusion from mass surveillance of Americans and prohibition of fully autonomous weapons.
firm being classified as a supply chain risk to national security, a designation previously reserved for foreign companies.
Private negotiations between Anthropic and the Pentagon failed, resulting in an ultimatum from the Pentagon to comply or face blacklisting. Anthropic intends to contest the supply chain risk designation, arguing that the legal basis for the action is misapplied.
Despite the ban, individual users and non-DoW contractors can continue to use Claude. However, the ban poses potential challenges for Anthropic, which relies on cloud services from companies with military contracts. If these providers are compelled to sever ties with Anthropic, it could significantly impact the company’s operations.
Anthropic maintains its stance against the use of its AI for autonomous weapons or domestic surveillance, despite the pressure and potential legal consequences during the transition period.
