Recent data indicates a significant shift in the landscape of the UK's technology sector, with two-thirds of tech firms now operating outside of London.

According to EmpowerRD, regional tech firms are increasingly involved in research and development (R&D) activities. For instance, 49.02% of tech firms in the North West engaged in R&D tax claims in the last year, compared to 33.94% in Greater London. However, funding remains a challenge, with 34.48% of London-based firms and 45.45% in the North West citing limited access to funding as a barrier.

London continues to lead in terms of innovation investment, with 79.31% of its firms increasing their innovation budgets over the past three years. In contrast, 58% of firms in the North East reported similar increases. Looking forward, 85% of firms in both regions anticipate further budget growth, indicating ongoing sector expansion.

Infrastructure and Technological Trends

Technological trends, such as AI adoption and rising power costs, are influencing operational decisions. A study by Asanti reveals that 52% of IT leaders are concerned about power costs, while 48% expect AI to significantly impact infrastructure strategies within the next three years. Consequently, there is a growing interest in regional data centers to optimize cost, compliance, and performance.

The UK's tech sector is experiencing a decentralization trend, with regional hubs becoming increasingly attractive due to lower operating costs, strong talent pipelines, and expanding infrastructure. This evolution towards a more distributed tech ecosystem is poised to become one of the UK's significant strengths.
